Why Is the Top of My Foot So Painful?

Why Is the Top of My Foot So Painful?

The tops of your feet are not the most common location for foot pain to develop. However, damage from dropping heavy objects on the front of your feet (like phones and laptops, for example) can cause painful fractures in the fragile metatarsal bones that extend into your toes. Improperly-fitted footwear can also cause top-of-the-foot pain and discomfort.

Some common causes of pain on the top of the foot include the following:

➔   Bone fractures—The metatarsal bones of the toes and other bones on top of the foot are capable of absorbing a huge amount of stress, but they are also susceptible to breaking and stress fractures. This susceptibility is magnified in the presence of various types of arthritis and osteoporosis (bone loss).

➔   Wearing tightly-fitting shoes—Footwear that is too tight can cause pain, swelling, and blistering on the top of the foot.

➔   Systemic diseases—As mentioned, arthritis and other systemic diseases like diabetes and PAD (peripheral artery disease) can cause stiffness, fluid retention, and pain at the top of the foot.

➔   Hormone imbalance—Experiencing pregnancy or menopause can cause the hormones to get out of balance and cause foot and ankle swelling.

➔   Age-related stress—Weakened bones and tissues caused by the aging process can contribute to pain on the top of the foot.
