Issues with your feet can affect anyone, but women have specific sets of issues that they need to attend to. Now is a good time to go over two of the most common problems that affect women’s foot health and what you can do about them...
The joints of the ankles are composed of many components including bones, tendons, and other tissues that all come together to create the ability to move your foot, stand, walk, work, and exercise. Ankle pain and damage can be cumulative, especially when previous injuries like sprains are not properly treated. Even a minor ankle injury can cause severe pain, but the actual injury may be comparatively minor. See your foot doctor for the proper assessment.
Some of the many probable causes of ankle pain include the following:
Achilles tendon injury
Bursitis
Gout flair
Arthritis
Radiating pain from plantar fasciitis
Treatment for an ankle sprain or other foot injury initially consists of the RICE protocol:
Rest—Take the weight off the affected ankle until you can rest and evaluate the injury to avoid causing further damage.
Ice—Apply an ice pack or cold compress several times a day for ten to fifteen minutes each time to reduce pain and swelling.
Compression—Compression bandages are carefully wrapped around the ankle, but not too tightly or circulation may be affected.
Elevation—While lying down on your back, prop the affected foot up on a pillow. This will help relieve pain and swelling to get a better idea of the severity of the injury.
In severe ankle sprain cases or for a foot or ankle fracture, surgery and complete foot immobilization may be required, so see your foot doctor.
