Issues with your feet can affect anyone, but women have specific sets of issues that they need to attend to. Now is a good time to go over two of the most common problems that affect women’s foot health and what you can do about them...
August is a time when summer is in full swing. People are hitting the beach, the pool, or just hanging outside enjoying themselves. August is also Summer Sun Safety Month. Your feet can be just as affected as any other part of your body by the sun. As such, it’s a good time to take precautions to avoid any over-exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
It’s easy to forget that your skin is your biggest organ. It can also be very sensitive. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. Every year in the United States more than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed. Foot melanoma is a type of cancer that affects the pigment-producing skin cells in the foot. Around 3% to 15% of melanomas occur on the foot.
There are fortunately a few simple tips you can follow to mitigate the harm done by UV rays. Try doing these things:
Use sunscreen. It’s easy to forget your feet but if they’re exposed it’s best to apply sunscreen when you go outside.
Avoid walking barefoot. If you do go out in the sun try using footwear that doesn’t leave your skin exposed.
Check yourself. It’s a good idea to check your feet daily for any moles, freckles, or general skin discoloration. If you do notice anything it’s important to contact an experienced specialist.
