Untreated Bunions Can Cause Other Foot Problems

Untreated Bunions Can Cause Other Foot Problems

A bunion is a toe deformity that appears as an enlarged bump on the side or top of the big toe. A similar condition can also affect the pinky toe and is known as a bunionette. In the beginning stages, bunions or bunionettes may not be particularly painful but they will worsen over time. Either condition will cause the outside toe to bend inward and press into the other toes, contributing to other foot problems.

Some other foot problems associated with untreated bunions include the following:

1)    Corns and callusesThese skin conditions occur as a reaction to pressure and they may form on or near the bunion causing swelling, pain, and discomfort.

2)    HammertoesWhen you develop a bunion on your big toe, it increases the likelihood of hammertoes occurring on the second and third toes.

3)    Ingrown toenailsWhen your toes are misaligned, they can cause excessive pressure on the toenails and a painful ingrown toenail is often the result.

4)    Redness, swelling, and blistering—The bony bump on your toe and the areas where your toes rub against each other and inside your footwear are susceptible to friction which can cause redness, swelling and blisters.

Bunions may have a genetic link since the condition is related to an inherited mechanical instability that can exacerbate the tendency to develop bunions and other toe deformities.
