Your skin responds to excess friction and pressure by producing a liquid-filled sac called a blister that covers the damaged skin. Blisters on the feet can be especially problematic since they can make it uncomfortable to wear shoes and walk or exercise. One of the main causes of blisters is footwear that doesn’t fit properly causing rubbing and pressure.
Have your feet properly measured and choose shoes that fit properly and provide adequate support. A computerized gait analysis can be performed to see if you have any pronation problems. Custom orthotic inserts may help correct gait abnormalities.
Clean and sterilize the skin—Clean with soap and warm water. Wipe the area down with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol to sterilize.
Protect the area by keeping covered—Apply an anti-bacterial ointment and a band-aid that covers the entire area. Check daily and keep clean and covered until healed.
Choose shoes that will not rub or further irritate the blister area.
If you are experiencing painful, recurring blisters on your feet see your foot doctor for an evaluation and the proper treatment.
