The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot between the heel bone and the toe bones. It helps to support the arch of the foot and absorbs all the stress and pressure of your daily exercises and activities. When this tissue becomes inflamed, irritated or torn, the result is debilitating heel stiffness and pain. A condition that often accompanies plantar fasciitis but is not caused by it is the formation of a growth on the heel called a spur. This small calcium deposit forms on the bottom of the heel bone but rarely causes pain in plantar fasciitis sufferers. Therefore, in many cases, removing the spur is not required to treat the plantar fasciitis.
A sharp stabbing pain in the bottom of the heel that is more pronounced in the morning when you arise is an indication of plantar fasciitis.
