Foot Care for Older Adults

Foot Care for Older Adults

Seventy-five percent of Americans will experience some type of foot disorder at some point in their lives. As we age, all the wear and tear our feet suffer over the years can start to take its toll. Luckily, there are some things you can do to make sure your golden years are as pain-free as possible.

MOST COMMON FOOT PROBLEMS FOR OLDER ADULTS

Older adults may experience several foot-related issues as they age. Some of the most common include:

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Experiencing pain can hinder mobility and lessen your quality of life. There are several steps you can take to mitigate foot-related problems as you age.

KEEP YOUR FEET MOISTURIZED

As your skin ages, it tends to retain less moisture. This can lead to dry skin which may crack and expose your feet to bacteria or fungi. Moisturizing your feet with lotion daily can help prevent this.

USE SHOE INSERTS

Getting older often means gaining some extra weight. This can cause extra stress and pressure on your feet. Store-bought inserts can provide more cushion to protect your foot. Another option is custom orthotics. These are custom inserts your podiatrist can design to fit the specific shape of your foot.

EXAMINE YOUR FEET

It’s important to notice any bruising, swelling, cuts, or any other abnormalities with your feet. These may be symptoms of deeper issues. If you do notice any of these things don’t wait, contact an experienced foot doctor to prevent any further problems.

If you are suffering from any foot-related symptoms contact a podiatrist today.
