Things are heating up out there! Summer is in full force with some areas experiencing record temperatures. People are engaging in more physical activities too. Hiking, going to the pool, playing sports, and other summer pursuits are great fun, but they can also cause your feet to sweat. Here are some tips to deal with sweaty feet to make sure you have a great time this summer.

First, it’s important to contact an experienced foot specialist if you are experiencing excessive sweat, as it may indicate particular health issues. Technically the condition is known as hyperhidrosis and is caused when glands in your feet produce excessive sweat. This condition affects 5% of individuals worldwide.

PREVENTING SWEATY FEET

Luckily there are a few ways to prevent excessive sweat in the first place:

  • Use antifungal powders. This is a type of powder that can be bought over the counter and applied to your shoes, socks, or directly on your feet. It can absorb sweat and keep your feet dry. An alternative is to use cornstarch, which can also soak up excess sweat but doesn’t have the same antifungal properties.
  • Use antiperspirant. Antiperspirant can be applied directly to your feet to block the sweat glands.
  • Choose the right socks. Make sure to choose socks that are not too thick and allow your feet to breathe. Sporting goods stores even sell socks that are specially designed to draw moisture away from pores and skin.
