May is the month we celebrate Arthritis Awareness Month to bring attention to this serious condition that affects more than 50 million Americans today.

CAN CHILDREN BE AFFECTED BY ARTHRITIS?

Yes! Children can be affected by arthritis just like adults. Although the causes are numerous, oftentimes arthritis in children is a sign that their immune system is not working properly. This can cause painful inflammation in the joints of the child. This condition can be undiagnosed if parents aren’t wary. In extreme cases, arthritis can even cause deformation.

WHAT SYMPTOMS SHOULD YOU LOOK OUT FOR?

Arthritis in children can take many forms. A parent may observe that a child is having problems with basic motor skills, such as tying their shoes or getting dressed. If you notice your child is walking unusually or complaining about pain in their joints, you may want to contact a specialist.  Some of the most common symptoms to look out for are the following:

  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Rash
  • Complaining about pain
  • Trouble bending their arms or leg
  • Fever
  • Fatigue

YOUR CHILD’S FEET

Feet are prone to arthritis as well. Swelling or inflammation in the joints of the toes can be particularly painful for children. Extreme arthritis can even cause deformations in their feet as the child grows. If not treated quickly this can cause permanent damage affecting how the child walks for life.
