5 Causes of Swelling in Your Feet and Ankles

Causes of Swelling in Your Feet and Ankles

Swelling in your feet and ankles can be caused by a rather wide variety of issues ranging from medication side effects to poor blood circulation, to systemic diseases and injuries. Just being on your feet all day for work or while playing sports can cause swelling that will most likely subside after a short rest. If you regularly experience foot and ankle inflammation you should see your foot doctor to determine the precise cause.

5 of the many reasons for your feet and ankles may swell include the following:

1)    Ankle sprains and other foot injuriesSpraining your ankle or experiencing another injury to your foot can cause trauma and rapid onset of swelling and pain.

2)    Being overweight—Carrying a lot of extra weight puts excess pressure on your feet when you walk, stand, or exercise. The stressful effect of each pound of extra weight is vastly multiplied when it reaches your feet, so try to lose those extra pounds.

3)    Diseases—Diseases of the kidneys, liver, heart, and lungs often contribute to swelling in the feet and ankles.

4)    Side effects of medications—Blood pressure medicines, antidepressants, and steroids (to name a few) can contribute to foot swelling.

5)    Edema—Constricted arteries and blood vessels caused by diseases can prevent fluid from being carried from your extremities resulting in pooling in the feet and ankles.

If you have worrisome swelling in your feet and ankles, see your foot doctor to determine the cause.
