4 Tips To Treat and Prevent Gout Attacks in Your Feet and Ankles

Treat and Prevent Gout Attacks

Gout is an extremely painful arthritic condition that can suddenly strike the feet and ankles, with the large joints of the big toe frequently being affected. The redness, swelling, and stiffness can be so severe that just brushing a sheet over your toe can cause extreme pain. The cause of the pain is the formation of tiny, sharp uric acid crystals in the joints, thought to be caused by consuming foods and beverages high in purines.

4 tips for treating and preventing gout include the following:

1)    Decrease or avoid alcohol consumption—Alcoholic beverages — particularly the ones that are grain-based — are notorious for increasing uric acid levels and causing gout attacks.

2)    Avoid foods that are high in purines—Fatty red meats and seafood like lobster and shrimp drenched in butter are high in purines, which have been shown to contribute to an increase in uric acid and gouty arthritis.

3)    Eat a healthy diet—Consuming an array of healthy foods including a variety of fruits and vegetables will improve your blood composition. Eating cherries and using organic apple cider vinegar in salad dressings can decrease uric acid build-up and help prevent gout attacks.

4)    Prescription medications—If you have recurring problems with gout, check with your doctor to see if medication can help bring your uric acid concentrations under control.
