4 Reasons for Pain on the Top of Your Foot

4 Reasons for Pain on the Top of Your Foot

Having severe pain and discomfort on the top of your foot isn’t as common as some other foot problems, but a variety of circumstances can cause pain in this area. If you have throbbing pain on top of your foot and are unable to put much weight on it, you may have a foot fracture and should seek immediate care.

4 possible reasons for experiencing pain on the top of your foot include the following:

  1. Tight-fitting footwear—Shoes like high heels that constrict your toes also put undue pressure on the top of the foot and can contribute to swelling, blistering, and severe discomfort.

  2. System-wide diseases—Complications from diabetes, various types of arthritis, and gout are a few of the diseases that can contribute to swelling and tenderness on top of the foot. Numbness and tingling from nerve damage can also occur on the tops of your feet.

  3. Fractures and other injuriesThe small bones that make up the toes are susceptible to injury from falling objects and stubbing. A stress fracture can radiate pain to the top of the foot and be difficult to trace without assistance from your podiatrist.

  4. Hormone imbalance—Swelling and pain on the top of the foot often happen during pregnancy and menopause and are due to hormone imbalances.

If you are experiencing pain on the top of your foot, contact your board-certified podiatrist for the proper diagnosis and treatment.
