3 Contributors to Foot Cancer

We don’t often think that skin cancer is something that can affect our feet since it is often associated with sun exposure. However, there are other factors that can contribute to the chances of developing this possibly deadly affliction with or without sun exposure. Cancer on your feet can mimic other skin problems including warts, moles, and blisters, so be sure to have them looked at by your podiatrist.
3 other factors that may increase your chances of getting cancer on your feet
-
Hereditary factors—Individuals who have inherited fair skin, light hair, and blue eyes have less melanin in their skin which can increase the danger of sun and chemical exposure. Since melanin is a pigment that absorbs light rays, having less of it makes your skin more likely to incur damage and possible cancerous growths.
-
Environmental contaminants—Chemical poisons in the environment including power plant emissions, vehicle exhaust, and other chemical pollutants can damage your skin, causing DNA mutations that may result in cancer.
-
Immune system problems—Viral infections like HPV and HIV may cause you to have difficulty with malignant cells due to poor immune response. People who have had organ transplants or undergone immunosuppressant therapy may also have trouble fighting off cancerous cells.
Among the deadliest forms of skin cancer is malignant melanoma. Since this skin cancer can take on the appearance of other foot problems such as plantar warts, ulcers, and fungal toenails, it is essential to have any skin or toenail abnormalities evaluated by your foot doctor.
