3 Common Foot and Ankle Injuries

3 Common Foot and Ankle Injuries

While athletes and people who exercise vigorously may be more susceptible to foot and ankle injuries, they can happen to anyone. Just stepping over the curb awkwardly while staring at your phone can lead to a severe ankle sprain or even a foot fracture. For any foot or ankle injuries, be sure to see your foot care professional for the best treatment.

3 of the most common foot and ankle injuries seen by podiatrists include the following:

1)    Tendonitis—A large number of tendons, ligaments, and other components in the feet and ankles are susceptible to stretching and trauma from aggressive exercise, sports, and overuse. The Achilles tendon that connects your heel to your calf is one of the most frequently injured tendons, and severe Achilles tendonitis or rupture can be very painful and debilitating.

2)    Ankle sprains and strains—When the many ligaments, tendons, and other soft tissues that support the ankle joint become stretched and damaged from rolling your foot over, the result can be very painful and debilitating. Even a minor ankle injury can be very painful. Always rest an injured ankle as soon as possible and if the swelling and pain does not begin to decrease after a few hours, you may have a serious injury requiring foot or ankle surgery.

3)    Breaks and hairline fractures—The foot and ankle are comprised of a multitude of bones that are subject to breaking and to developing stress fractures. While breaks usually occur suddenly, a hairline fracture can develop from repetitive stress over time. Since they can mimic other injuries, be sure to see your podiatrist for the right diagnosis.
