3 Common Childhood Foot Problems

3 Common Childhood Foot Problems

Children’s bones, ligaments, tendons, and other components of the feet and ankles are undergoing an array of changes as they develop. Some of these changes, like Sever’s disease or Osgood-Schlatter disease will correct over time as varying growth rates stabilize. The best way to treat and prevent childhood foot and ankle problems is with regular visits to your foot doctor for proper monitoring and care.

3 common childhood foot and ankle problems may include the following:

  1. Sever’s disease—This is a growth plate problem where the heel becomes swollen and very painful because of the unequal development in the plate area. This condition usually resolves as the plate and bone growth normalize. Sporting and other activities will need to be halted and minimized to prevent damage to the bones and other tissues.

  2. FracturesChildren are more susceptible to breaks and stress fractures. Stress fractures can radiate problems to other areas of the foot, so see your foot doctor for the proper diagnosis and treatment.

  3. Ankle sprainsChildren are more susceptible to ankle injuries as their bones and ligaments are developing. Ankle sprains and strains need to be properly treated by your foot doctor to avoid improper healing and possibly chronic complications.

If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain and discomfort, consult with your foot doctor for the proper diagnosis and treatment.
