Plantar Fasciitis and Other Common Running Injuries

Running is a deceptively simple activity that can be a great way to get your daily exercise, but it also comes with the risk of serious injury, especially when basic requirements such as proper footwear and warming up before the run are neglected.

 Some of the most common injuries incurred while running include the following:

  • Plantar fasciitisHeel pain in runners and other athletes is a common problem that is caused by an inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is the web-like connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from your toes to your heel. The connection point at the heel bone is often the location where severe pain and discomfort are first noticed.
  • Achilles tendonitis—The Achilles tendon connects your calf muscle to your heel bone and is subject to stress, stretching, and possible tearing during strenuous exercise that can cause debilitating and painful injuries. Sudden stops and starts such as from doing wind sprints can contribute to this injury. The stress of repetitive motion activities such as long distance running is also a culprit.
  • Shin splints—The muscles that encompass the shin bone can become irritated and swollen from the constant pounding encountered during running. Shin splints are frequently associated with suddenly changing running surfaces from hard to soft, or from soft to hard.

A great way to avoid these types of injuries is with proper stretching and by wearing properly-fitted shoes that are appropriate for the activity.
