Haglund’s Deformity Causes Heel Pain

Are you experiencing debilitating heel pain from a small bump on the back of your heel? If the bump is located where your Achilles tendon attaches to the bone, then you probably have a condition known as Haglund’s deformity. This is a bone growth that often affects those who wear high-heeled shoes and is the reason that it is referred to as the pump bump.

People who have untreated high arches and those with shortened Achilles tendons are generally more susceptible to developing this deformity, but it can occur in anyone. Constant rubbing on the heel from the pressure of tightly fitting shoes causes the body to grow this bony enlargement in response. Symptoms may include extreme pain in the heel area, inflammation, blistering, and the onset of bursitis.

Simple steps you can take to treat Haglund’s deformity include the following:

Wearing sandals or clogs that don’t rub on the heel will help remove the source of the friction and eliminate the pain. Ice packs placed on the heel for twenty minutes at a time will reduce swelling and discomfort. Heel pads may be added to your footwear to ease the pain from rubbing. Achilles tendon tightness can be alleviated with calf stretching exercises. Ibuprofen can be taken to help manage the pain.

More advanced treatment options

If the bump continues to grow larger and the pain and discomfort become worse, there are several other options for treatment that your foot doctor may suggest:

  • Custom orthotic insertsBy redirecting the stress and pressure, these inserts can help relieve pain and discomfort and allow healing to take place.
  • SurgeryThe bony protrusion can be surgically reduced so that it no longer rubs on your footwear.
  • Foot protection—It may be advisable to wear an immobilizing walking boot in severe cases, and especially after undergoing surgery, for proper healing to occur.
